At least 50 dead in Iraq attacks

A car bomb has killed at least seven people and injured another 24 in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, officials say.

The attack took place during the rush hour in the central Karrada district, which is predominantly Shia. There are fears the death toll could rise.

One report said the vehicle exploded near a security checkpoint. The blast shook buildings and damaged shops in the area.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Attacks in Iraq have increased since US troops withdrew in December.

Last week, at least 18 people were killed in a suicide attack near the Iraqi police academy in the capital.
